None injured during shooting at house party in American Canyon

No one was injured after 30 or 40 shots were fired at a house party Friday night in American Canyon, officials said.

Just after midnight, a house party with more than 300 people was fully underway at the 100 block of Independence Drive.

Around this time, a fight occurred and multiple shots were fired, according to Sgt.

New Vallejoan plans international festival to celebrate diversity

Shortly after Paul Zarkas moved to Vallejo not long ago, he was struck by its ethnic diversity and determined to create a public event to celebrate it.

The first International Cultural Food & Music Festival is planned for 3 to 5 p.m. at the waterfront, all three days of Labor Day weekend. Entrance to the festival is free.

Transient arrested in American Canyon with truck stolen from East Coast

AMERICAN CANYON >> A transient was arrested in the wee hours of Saturday morning driving a truck that was found to have been stolen from the other side of the country, American Canyon Police Chief Tracey Stuart said.

At about 1:25 a.m. Saturday, an officer stopped a Chevy truck on Via Firenza for mechanical violations, she said.

NAPA >> The first mosquitos in Napa County testing positive for West Nile Virus this year were detected in American Canyon last week, the Napa County Mosquito Abatement District announced.

On July 22, two samples of mosquitoes collected in American Canyon tested positive for the virus, they said.

Garage fire extinguished before displacing Vallejo family

A structure fire in Vallejo early Monday damaged a garage, but left a family home habitable, Vallejo Fire Department Battalion Chief Cliff Campbell said.

The call came in at about 5:40 a.m. about a fire on Pueblo Way, where fire crews found an exterior wall of a garage burning.

Some damage was done to the garage, but fire fighters were able to contain the blaze to that area and the family living in the home was not displaced, Campbell said.

AmCan's hoped for town center's environmental report finds serious down side

AMERICAN CANYON >> Even with identified mitigation efforts, the Watson Ranch project would elevate traffic and greenhouse emissions to unacceptable levels, according to the recently released draft Environmental Impact Report on the long-awaited development.

This surprises no one and does not necessarily spell the end for the so-called town center project, City Manager Dana Shigley said Friday.

The Vallejo Department of Motor Vehicles field office will be closed for renovations for about a month starting next week, agency officials announced.

DMV officials said they want customers to be aware that the Vallejo office at 200 Couch St. will close at noon July 29, so improvements can be made.

Unemployment is up slightly in Solano and Napa counties, according to the state's latest figures, released Friday.

The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics website notes that it's typical for unemployment to rise over the summer months.

Local animal shelters to participate in Clear the Shelter event Saturday

The Napa County Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of the North Bay are participating Saturday in the second annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption drive, hosted by NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48.

This is the second year both agencies have participated in the national event.

"This is a great event," Humane Society board vice president Kristin Eddy said.

Lake Curry Dam mercury leak tests found no harmful levels

The mercury leak detected in an old out-building near a Vallejo-owned Napa County lake was tested and found not to pose a danger, city officials announced.

On July 18, a city-hired contractor doing routine pipeline maintenance in an old valve house at the Lake Curry Dam discovered that mercury had leaked from a non-functioning, circa 1924 water flow meter.

Napa County Health & Human Services to move Aug. 12

NAPA >> Napa County Health & Human Services Agency is scheduled to begin moving Aug. 12 to its new location -- the old Dey Labs facility -- 2751 Napa Valley Corporate Dr., Buildings A and B, county officials announced.

The move consolidates public health, mental health, child welfare services, public assistance programs, training and employment services, and alcohol and drug services into one campus.

American Canyon, Napa County Transit hop on the Pokémon bandwagon

At least two Napa County agencies are riding the Pokémon Go wave, tapping into the nationwide craze to bring people where they'd like them to go.

The city of American Canyon let the public know that Pokémon characters were likely to appear at last Sunday's Farmer's Market. The ploy worked, though a technical glitch prevented it from being as successful as it might have been, Parks and Recreation Department Director Creighton Wright said.

Nurses will be picketing Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center on Wednesday, as one of seven Kaiser hospitals across California to call attention to what they say is unsafe staffing and eroding standards of patient care, California Nurses Association (CNA) officials announced Tuesday.

CNA represents more than 18,000 Registered Nurses and nurse practitioners at 87 Kaiser hospitals and clinics statewide.

Twenty local students from Kaiser Permanente's Napa/Solano area are working at paid internships at Kaiser facilities in Vallejo and Vacaville as part of a program called KP LAUNCH, Kaiser officials announced.

This is the 48th year that Kaiser Permanente is hosting the program, through which hundreds of students aged 16 to 20 are selected from a competitive pool of applicants to work in various departments at its medical centers throughout California, they said.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, an officer found a Ford Focus that had been reported stolen to the California Highway Patrol out of Napa County, parked at 100 W.

Vallejo chamber president Rich Curtola to retire

After more than six years with the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce -- four of them as president and CEO -- Rich Curtola announced he's retiring at the end of the year. The chamber board is already searching for his replacement.

Chamber member Ken Ingersoll, owner of Gracie's Family Barbecue down the block from the chamber's Virginia Street offices, said there's no replacing Rich Curtola.

Librarian and communications media specialist Jennifer Baker is running for a seat on the Napa Valley College Board of Trustees in the November election to represent Area 1, which includes the Browns Valley, South Foster Road, Napa River and Terrace and Shurtleff neighborhoods, she announced.

Napa nurses to vote on strike Thursday

The nurses at Napa's Queen of the Valley Medical Center will vote Thursday on whether to strike, nurses union officials announced Tuesday. They are among nurses at several Catholic hospitals threatening to strike for better wages and working conditions, union officials said.

"Queen's RNs have waited long enough for our management to agree to a fair contract," Registered Nurse Marylou Bahn, said in the announcement.
