Marijuana is back on the American Canyon agenda for Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. City Council meeting, as is an effort to move forward on landscaping the PG&E substation and several other projects.

City staff is recommending council members extend by another six months - until May 4 - a temporary moratorium on outdoor marijuana cultivation that is set to expire Nov.

Free mammograms in October for under-insured women over 40 in Vallejo

Sutter Solano Medical Center is offering free mammograms one day in October, to women age 40 and older, hospital officials announced.

Sutter Solano Medical Center's Imaging and Mammography Department will be offering free mammograms to underinsured community members. Appointments are required and space is limited, they said.

Napa bus study seeks respondents

NAPA >> The Napa Valley Transportation Authority is seeking public input on the final draft of a Vine Transit Express Bus study that focuses on providing faster transit to key regional destinations on Napa County's main travel corridors.

Key travel destinations include the Vallejo Ferry Terminal, the El Cerrito del Norte BART station, and Amtrak's Capitol Corridor in Suisun City.

Kaiser Permanente officials on Thursday announced a $1 million contribution to the CDC Foundation to provide immediate public health support in Puerto Rico following the devastation caused by recent hurricanes.

The CDC Foundation is an independent nonprofit created to mobilize philanthropic and private-sector resources to extend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) lifesaving work, officials said.

Convicted Napa murderer may not be paroled

Following some concern generated by a media report about the possible release of a convicted Napa area murderer, a California Department of Corrections spokesman said a definitive decision has not yet been made yet.

Department of Corrections spokesman Luis Patino said there is still a process to go through before Jerre Allen, 75, who was convicted of murdering his ex-wife in 1994, is actually granted parole.

While Vallejo remains the San Francisco Bay Area's most affordable place to rent a home, it's not clear how long that will last, since a new report finds rents here are rising faster than elsewhere.

Local Caltrans road closures

The Columbus Parkway exit from westbound Interstate-780 in Benicia will be closed for four consecutive days starting Tuesday, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and PG&E officials announced. Crews will remove multiple overgrown trees and bushes on and near the Columbus Parkway exit to ensure the continued access and operation of underground utility pipelines in the area, they said.

Horses are people, too.

At least they're close enough to deserve humane treatment.

That was the impetus for and remains the focus of an organization called Equitopia, founded by a Vallejo horse lover about 18 months ago.

Caroline Hegarty's mission for Equitopia (Equi - for horse, and topia - for perfect place) is to establish it "as the global leader in the provision of online and in-person research and evidence-based education on the care, welfare and training of horses and riders.

Two Solano County felons indicted on weapons charges

Two Solano County men were indicted on weapons charges by a grand jury, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced Thursday.

The federal grand jury returned two separate indictments against Jerry Lyle Andrews, Jr., 34, of Vallejo and Maurice Darnell Jones, Jr., 21, of Vacaville, and, with one count each of being a felon in possession of a firearm, Talbert announced.

American Canyon Community grant applications deadline next month

AMERICAN CANYON >> The deadline to submit proposals for this city's community grant program is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, officials announced.

The city of American Canyon periodically receives requests from community groups for Community Subsidy Grant funds.

The city council adopted a policy identifying how to handle these requests, which outlines a time line for each step of the process, establishes qualifying criteria and criteria for evaluating proposals, and delineates reporting requirements.

Interstate-780 in Vallejo will be closed over night for two consecutive nights as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) begins installation of bridge scaffolding and initial bridge deck work for the new Laurel Street Bridge, agency officials said.

The new, state-of-the-art facility at 1687 N. Ascot Parkway, celebrates its grand opening at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Following some 30 years during which most California high schools stopped offering vocational classes, Solano Community College's 4-year-old automotive course's growth proves letting those programs go was a mistake, Hidy said.

Joblessness higher in Solano, unchanged in Napa in August

The unemployment rate in Solano County rose for the second consecutive month, while the rate in Napa remained steady for a second month in row, according to state figures released Friday.

Solano County's jobless rate was 5.5 percent in August, up from a revised 5.4 percent in July, and below the year-ago estimate of 5.

A Vallejo pastor and his co-conspirator will spend many years behind bars for defrauding his own congregation members, California Attorney General Becerra announced.

Luther Feltus-Curry, 69, former pastor for the Revival Center Ministries, and Alma Perez, 56, were sentenced to serve nearly 24 years and 10 years respectively, according to the announcement.

A Vallejo woman and Fairfield man were arrested on suspicion of child abuse in American Canyon on Sunday morning, American Canyon Police Chief Tracey Stuart said Monday.

On Sunday, at about 10:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the apartment complex at 5500 Eucalyptus Drive for a small child alone in a car crying for her mother, Stuart said.

Two dead in plane crash early Sunday in Benicia

BENICIA >> A father and son were killed early Sunday when the plane they were in crashed in unincorporated Benicia, the Solano County Sheriff's Office said.

Federal investigators are investigating the crash, which reportedly happened just after 4 a.m. in the 2200 block of Lake Herman Road.

Deputies arrived at the site, where they met with Civil Air Patrol members who had reportedly found wreckage from a small single-engine Bonanza Beechcraft plane that had been reported missing Saturday.

Calistoga's Napa River Bridge demolition starts this week

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin demolishing the Napa River Bridge on State Route 29 (SR-29) in Calistoga the week of Sept. 7, agency officials announced.

The project demolishes and rebuilds the bridge to the latest seismic safety standards, they said.

During the daytime demolition of the bridge's southern section, lasting approximately five to seven days, traffic lanes on the bridge will remain open in both directions.

A new public/private partnership has launched to encourage some Solano County workers to use public transit by bridging the transportation gap between the train station and the employees' offices, officials announced.

As it stands, many people who take public transit to work in Solano County have to find a way from the station to their place of business.

Killer of Napa woman nearly 30 years ago to be released to ease prison overcrowding

An elderly man who has served nearly 30 years in prison for murder was recently granted parole because of prison overcrowding, Napa County officials announced Friday.

Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley announced that Edward Voss, 77, was granted parole after an Aug. 25 hearing before the Board of Parole Hearings at California Health Care Facility in Stockton.
