New York transplant fills bags with needed items, gives them away throughout Vallejo

Mildred Gains wants to help needy children succeed in school by providing them with school supplies. It's just one way this 47-year-old New York City native, Vallejo resident and mother of two grown daughters helps to improve her adopted community.

This year, Gains, her husband Craig and their cadre of volunteers has collected and filled 40 backpacks with items like binders, composition notebooks, single-subject notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, rulers, erasers, lunch boxes, and other items, including dictionaries.
